The Power of AI

Max-AI® (a division of BHS Equipment) Installs Four AQC-Flex Sorting Robots at Revac in Norway

Marking a Milestone in Metal Scrap Automation

Revetal, Norway — October 2025 — Max-AI®, a division of the BHS Group (Bulk Handling Systems), has successfully installed four sorting robots at Revac AS in Revetal, Norway. This new installation represents a major step forward in the automation of metal scrap recycling.

Revac AS is one of Scandinavia’s leading recycling companies, specializing in the processing and recovery of metal fractions and electrical waste. With a commitment to sustainability and innovation, Revac plays a major role in the Northern European metal recycling market, operating one of the region’s most modern facilities.

The newly installed Max-AI® robotic sorters are designed to identify and separate meatballs, bird nests, motors, and other contaminants from the metal scrap stream. This advanced robotic sorting technology helps improve product purity, reduce manual handling, and increase overall process efficiency — setting a new benchmark for automated metal recovery.

Each robot at the Revac facility is equipped with Max-AI® VIS for real-time material recognition and intelligent sorting decisions.

With nearly a decade of proven experience in robotic sorting within the recycling industry, Max-AI® continues to lead the way in intelligent automation. Unique in the market, Max-AI® designs and manufactures every critical component of its systems in-house — from neural networks (AI and computer vision) and control systems to robotic grippers and mechanical assemblies. The company’s integrated approach is supported by a portfolio of patents that reflect its deep technological expertise and commitment to continuous innovation.

The installation was integrated inside a shredding line build by Danieli Centro Recycling, a global leader in metal recycling systems and equipment. Danieli Centro Recycling designs and builds complete plants and technologies for ferrous and non-ferrous scrap processing and is recognized worldwide for its engineering excellence within the metals industry.

The system features four ABB robotic arms integrated with Max-AI® technology, achieving high-speed, precise material recovery. In addition to its technological strengths, Max-AI® offers full European service and installation support through a dedicated regional team — ensuring optimal system performance and customer success across Europe.

“This project marks an important milestone for both Revac and Max-AI,” said Johan Keetbaas, Sales manager, Max-AI. “It demonstrates how advanced robotics and artificial intelligence can transform metal scrap recycling — making it smarter, safer, and more sustainable.”

One of the cornerstone components of the Max-AI robotic sorting solution is the Max-AI VIS (Visual Identification System). This vision system, powered by multi-layer neural networks, enables real-time recognition and classification of materials as they flow through the sorting line. Unlike deterministic sensors (such as pure NIR, EC or Xray), the VIS system “sees” objects in a more human-like fashion, distinguishing between metals, contaminants, motors, meatballs, bird nests, and other impurities — even when mixtures change over time. The VIS connects seamlessly to the BHS Total Intelligence Platform, or other facility control systems, giving operators live insight into material composition, process performance, quality metrics, and trends over hours, days or months. The system is also highly adaptive: the neural networks can be retrained or refined to recognize new material types as scrap streams evolve, offering a future-proof solution for dynamic recycling operations.
